Google intends to reshape its ad sales division, leveraging machine learning for customer ad purchases on Search, YouTube, and more.
Based on an insider, The Information disclosed that a substantial portion of its 30,000 workforce is set for restructuring. Last week, Sean Downey, responsible for ad sales to major clients in the Americas, informed department employees in a company-wide meeting, refraining from specifying if the changes would involve job cuts.
According to another source, Google intends to streamline its workforce, potentially involving layoffs, by reassigning personnel in its significant customer sales unit responsible for managing relationships with major advertisers.
Staff reductions at Google
In January of this year, the company owned by Alphabet revealed intentions to eliminate 12,000 positions globally, representing 6% of its worldwide staff. By June, Google initiated layoffs at the Waze mapping app, integrating its advertising system with Google Ads technology.
To enhance the long-term experience for Waze advertisers, we are transitioning the current advertising system to Google Ads technology. As a result, roles concentrated on Waze Ads monetization have been reduced, announced Google. The acquisition of Waze took place in 2013 for approximately $1.3 billion.
In December of the previous year, Google announced the integration of Waze and Google Maps teams to streamline operations, incorporating it into the Google Geo division. This division encompasses a portfolio of real-world mapping products such as Google Maps, Google Earth, and Street View.
Integrating the Waze team into Geo’s array of real-world mapping products will foster greater technical collaboration among the teams, stated a spokesperson at that time.
