Humane, founded by former Apple engineers Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, has unveiled its first piece of hardware, the Humane AI Pin. This compact, square device, powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Microsoft’s AI models, can be attached to clothing and serves as a digital assistant.

How much does Humane AI Pin cost

With a price tag of $699, the AI Pin comprises a square device and a magnetically attachable battery pack for clothing or surfaces. In addition to the device cost, a monthly fee of $24 for a Humane subscription provides a phone number and data coverage through T-Mobile’s network. The company announced that preorders begin on November 16th, with shipping scheduled for early 2024, according to Wired.

Humane’s AI Pin adds a touch of style to artificial intelligence

The AI Pin consists of a compact square unit and a magnetic attachable battery pack designed for clothing or surfaces. It comes in three colors—Eclipse, Equinox, and Lunar. Instead of a traditional screen, it incorporates a small projector capable of projecting laser icons and text onto the user’s palm.

Chaudhri emphasized that the device lacks wake words, ensuring it doesn’t continuously listen or record. The device remains inactive until triggered, which can be done through voice, touch, gestures, or the laser ink display. Manual activation involves tapping and dragging on the touchpad, with the “Trust Light” blinking to indicate data collection.

Fueled by OpenAI and Microsoft; operates on Cosmos

The AI Pin seeks to offer users a suite of AI tools from Microsoft and Open AI, eliminating the manual search and download of apps. The Cosmos operating system automatically directs user queries to the relevant tools without the need for downloading and managing applications. Without a traditional home screen, users can communicate with or touch the Pin to convey their preferences.

In a TED Talk held in April, Chaudhri showcased the AI Pin, showcasing functionalities such as projecting caller IDs for incoming calls, summarizing daily emails, and identifying foods with nutritional values. The device also demonstrated support for context-based inquiries, illustrated by Chaudhri posing the question, “What’s the exhibit Ava texted me to go see while I’m here?

The device incorporates a Snapdragon processor, although the specific model remains undisclosed. With a weight of approximately 34 grams, the inclusion of the “battery booster” adds an additional 20 grams. The camera has the capability to capture 13-megapixel photos and is set to support video recording with an upcoming software update. The AI Pin is equipped with a “Personic Speaker” that can adjust its volume for personalized audio experiences or louder settings in group scenarios. Additionally, it can connect to Bluetooth headphones.
