A report indicates that Apple could introduce updated iPad Air and iPad Pro models in 2024. Rumors also suggest that the company might release a large-screen iPad Air for the first time, potentially marking the most significant update yet to its more affordable tablet range. Following the 2022 redesign, which introduced a 10.9-inch display and a flat-edged design akin to the iPad Pro, Apple is likely to maintain the same basic design this year but could introduce a new form factor.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that Apple may launch a 12.9-inch iPad Air model in 2024. If the rumors are accurate, this would be the first time the iPad Air is offered in two display sizes, similar to the iPad Pro lineup, which also features two display size options.
The speculated iPad Air models are anticipated to launch in March. This refreshed iPad Air series is expected to deliver enhanced performance, potentially powered by the M2 or M3 chip. Additionally, Apple is rumored to introduce new color choices for these budget-friendly tablets.
According to the report, the 12.9-inch iPad Air is expected to utilize the same LCD screen technology as the 10.9-inch model.
According to a report from 9to5Mac, leaked schematics from Apple’s supply chain indicate that the upcoming iPad Air models will include a redesigned camera bump. Unlike the current single circular camera cutout on the back, this redesign suggests a different camera configuration.
The upcoming camera module is anticipated to adopt a vertically-oriented design, reminiscent of past iPhone models like the iPhone X. Rumors suggest that both the camera and the flash will be housed within the same camera bump, potentially increasing its size. In contrast, the current iPad Air models do not include a camera flash.
Reportedly, Apple is planning to introduce a new Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro, featuring a more laptop-style aluminum design. However, it appears that the upcoming keyboard may not be supported by the iPad Air.
Gurman also suggests that the new Magic Keyboard will be specifically designed for the iPad Pro series. However, the existing Magic Keyboard will remain compatible with the iPad Air series, including both the 10.9-inch and 12.9-inch models.
In December 2023, Gurman commented: “The new Magic Keyboard will offer another unique feature for the iPad Pro. There are no plans for a new version of this accessory for the iPad Air. The new 12.9-inch model will continue to use the current Magic Keyboard designed for that screen size. So, if you prioritize having the best keyboard, you’ll have another reason to opt for the Pro.”
