iOS 18 might revolutionize the way we perceive iPhones

In response to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple’s recent move to permit third-party apps, browsers, and payment gateways on iPhones signifies a substantial shift in its long-term strategy. A Bloomberg report suggests that Apple might extend this strategy worldwide, potentially commencing with the iOS 18 update.

The iOS 17.4 update for iPhones is set to roll out various features exclusively in the European region initially, as explicitly mentioned by the company. Cupertino plans to make at least some of these features available globally by the conclusion of 2024 through the iOS 18 update.

At WWDC 2024 in June, Apple is set to officially unveil iOS 18, showcasing a range of innovative features, some possibly driven by artificial intelligence. These advancements may address existing limitations, with native ChatGPT-like capabilities potentially integrated into iPhones. The upcoming iPhone 16 series is anticipated to introduce these features, leveraging an in-house large language model. While some functionalities may operate on-device using the next-generation chip, a recent report from 9to5Mac hints at the possibility of Apple building these AI experiences atop OpenAI’s GPT.

Key forthcoming AI functionalities on the iPhone may encompass Siri-driven content summarization, automated playlist creation on Apple Music, a notes app employing AI for rapid content generation, and an improved photo editor utilizing generative AI, mirroring features found in the latest smartphones from Google and Samsung.

Furthermore, in iOS 18, Apple plans to integrate RCS messaging, providing a comparable rich texting experience to iMessage, especially when communicating with Android users. Despite this, the message bubble color will persist in green. Alongside iOS 18, Apple is poised to unveil iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, and macOS 15 at WWDC 2024, each anticipated to introduce novel features and capabilities.
